In this week’s #ThrowAdThursday we take a quirky look at the large-scale drawings of Parisian-born artist and art director, Ugo Gattoni, who produces highly skilled and detailed work, whether it is for a mural, print or for commercial use. At the begging of this year Ugo Gattoni followed up on his ongoing relationship with Hermès, and after exploring their archives and private collection, he completed a distinct scarf design for the French high fashion brand.

But, as he loves “to immerse people in universes”, the author, who is well known for his ornate, dreamlike characters made with graphite or ink and takes his inspiration from the likes of Escher, Dalí or Bosch, produced a surreal and mind-bogglingly elaborate depiction of a strange cityscape called Hippolis where in its centre stands a gigantic monument dedicated to the Hermès horse.

The artist explains he likes to toy with perspective and that for him “creating huge pieces is important. It’s a game of scale between your body and the drawing,” and adds that “when you’re quite far away, you see a cityscape for example, with a beginning and an end. But when you’re close to it, you can’t see the frame anymore. You are surrounded by the drawing, and thanks to all the details, your eyes can wander freely, going in a different direction every time.” So, take a stroll through his universe full of originality, creativity and craftsmanship and see little horses enjoy sledging or jumping from a balloon, walking on tightropes and frolicking through the phantasmagorical world of Hippolis.

More recently, Ugo Gattoni, who works for Helsinki- and Amsterdam-based agency Agent Pekka, created another distinctive wonderland for a different prestigious French brand, Ruinart. In the new animation created for Ruinart’s anamorphosis installation at Tokyo exhibition we get to explore the vineyards, house and crayères of the oldest established Champagne house.
