Just as no one is doomed to live a sad life, neither should the Earth have a gloomy fate. The old saying “You make the bed you lie in” applies to humans, but what about Mother Nature, whose fate depends on our actions? We are the ones who make the bed for it, and as it seems, we don’t choose clean linen… This is reflected everywhere you look in nature: The weather has become extreme, we are witnessing natural disasters that we could have not even imagined, and the sea level is rising, threatening our lives. All of these are triggered by a singular process: Climate change!
If we keep fueling the phenomenon of global warming, the Earth will continue to fight back through wildfires, unpredictable superstorms, scorching heatwaves, droughts, flooding, and the list could go on. But the die has not been cast. Yet. If we #ActNow, we can save the world from the climate crisis.
To make people consider their actions twice, Extinction Rebellion launched a 3-minute-long film, in which the action happens 30 years from now. To highlight the precarious state of the environment, the group borrowed the voice of award-winning actress Whoopi Goldberg. “Gigantic Change” was launched to mark World Environment Day and focuses on two different scenarios for the Earth: A happy and a sad one.
Set in 2050, the film shows a little girl asking her grandmother to please read her a bedtime story. The old woman describes the environmental collapse that has happened back in 2020 and then lets her niece finish the story. The ending is ambiguous, but still, the film offers hope to people. Also, the year 2050 wasn’t randomly picked, as many nations have pledged to reduce carbon emissions by then.
Behind the short animation stand the creatives at Passion Pictures, the London-based studio which is also responsible for the Rang-tan campaign, made for British supermarket chain Iceland. George Lewin, the co-director who approached Goldberg for this project, says: “Her iconic voice could bring a perfect sense of gravitas to the performance. Plus, she is outspoken on environmental issues and had the potential to inspire many of her followers to take action. So, we sent the script to her agent, and she came back quickly saying ‘I’m in.’ We couldn’t believe it.”
The film invites people to visit thegiganticchange.com, where they can find out what can be done today to make for a better tomorrow.
