In a new campaign by advertising agency Brand Station, an FCB Alliance, Sea Shepherd, a marine wildlife conservation organization, embarked on a mission to underline the damaging effects fishing nets have on the marine ecosystem. Captain Paul Watson, the founder of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, is at the helm of the campaign, trying to raise awareness about life in the oceans.
Via a short video, the founder underlines the consequences of overfishing, which is responsible for destroying 90% of the fishes in the last 50 years. Each day, over 20 million kilometers of fishing nets are set in the oceans, trapping and asphyxiating hundreds of thousands of whales and dolphins, bringing them to the brink of extinction. A suffocated marine ecosystem translates into a dead ocean and, eventually, humanity parishes.
The NGO appeals to people to take action; otherwise, we’ll be left without fish and stumbling in the remaining fishing nets. A tragic fate but one which can be positively changed if we act now. To make people aware of the critical situation our oceans are currently in, the Sea Shepherd NGO launched an interactive platform, a digital experience through which they want to save marine life from going extinct because of the fishing nets.
“No-fishing.net is a campaign created by Sea Shepherd to save the ocean from fishing nets. Fishing nets used by industrial fishing fleets to catch an absurd and unnecessary amount of fishes. Fishing nets that contribute to the endangerment and extinction of many species. Fishing nets which, when lost or discarded in the ocean, continue killing wildlife long after the boats are gone,” says the NGO on the campaign’s centerpiece, a platform that has been suggestively titled No-fishing.net.
The site leads you to an online map users can interact with. The map features the continents in light blue and the oceans in the same color but in a different shade. While on land users can see the silhouettes of the world’s biggest mountains, when looking to admire the oceans, you see them covered by nets. On them float some ships, with a mission to help clean the ocean and give it a chance to breathe again.
The “Take Action” button unlocks a different kind of donation experience: A boat floats on the ocean waves and the waters around it are crystal-clear. But, depending on the donation made, these clean waters will grow in size as a result of you supporting the NGO in its mission to keep the ocean free of fishing nets so that the marine wildlife can thrive.
