What most people know about Wolfgang Amadeus (Amadé) Mozart is that he was one of the greatest music composers of all time. Born to a musical family in Salzburg, Mozart composed more than 600 works, with Sonata No. 11 probably being his most famous piece. But aside from being a brilliant musician, Mozart was a man of pleasure and, just like any normal human being, he loved ice cream.
In a letter from Paris, dating to July 3, 1778, he wrote to his father, Leopold, that he indulged himself with a delicious gelato after having a successful symphony concert performance. “After the symphony I therefore immediately went to the Palais Royale out of joy — had a good ice [ceam] — prayed the Rosary that I had promised — and went home.”
Born more than two centuries ago, Mozart didn’t have the technology needed to visually complement his music. Until now, as ice cream brand Magnum decided to surprise the maestro with his own music video. Teaming up with LOLA MullenLowe, the brand pays homage to this music icon with the first music video for one of his greatest compositions: Symphony No. 25 — a dynamic acoustic piece composed by the artist when he was only 17.
“Mozart was one of the greatest composers, a man of pleasure and, as we now know, a true ice cream lover,” says Christiane Haasis, Unilever Business Unit Lead Icecream DAChBeNeLux. “With his passion and desire to constantly reinvent himself, he would be the ideal Magnum ambassador today.”
Titled “MOZART by MAGNUM,” the video premiered during a reception hosted by the International Mozarteum Foundation and Magnum and was created to mark the launch of yet another classic: The Magnum Remix range, a line of ice cream that lies at the intersection between two popular Magnum classics.
The video brings Mozart’s music to the 21st century, with Magnum reimagining what Mozart’s play might have sounded like if he had the technology available today. Besides being a fest to our ears, the music video surprises the audience with psychedelic-like animations, allowing us to venture inside the musician’s mind and see his creative thoughts up close.
“We, the International Mozarteum Foundation, are of course particularly pleased that Magnum, one of the world’s leading ice cream brands, is honoring Wolfgang Amadé Mozart with this international creative project. Cooperations like this certainly help to make younger generations aware of Mozart. I am convinced that it will encourage many people to take a closer look at the musical genius,” says Rainer Heneis, CEO of the International Mozarteum Foundation.
“It’s a dream come true to be able to pay tribute to a classic like Mozart creating his first ever music video for one of his compositions and to have it become part of an exhibition at his very own museum,” continues Tomas Ostiglia, Executive Creative Director at LOLA MullenLowe.
Linus Klumpner, Director of the Mozart Museums in Salzburg, concludes: “The video remix developed for the current Magnum campaign is a creative example of how Mozart can be reinterpreted in the 21st century. ‘MOZART by MAGNUM’ joins a series of exciting collaborations between the brand and contemporary artists. I am delighted that the video can now be shown to visitors from all over the world as part of a special exhibition in Mozart’s Birthplace.”
The campaign runs across OOH in Salzburg, print, online, and social media. Mozart’s fans can experience the “MOZART by MAGNUM” exhibition by visiting the house where the maestro was born, delighting themselves with more information about the composer’s passion for music and love for ice cream. Also, made exclusively for this exhibition are a series of posters that users can download and use as wallpapers for their mobiles.
