Last week in our #ThrowAdThursday section, we took on a seamless design of a shape-shifting BMW Gina Light Visionary Model and today we take a trip to admire vast Norwegian landscapes, on a passport. In 2014 Oslo cross-disciplinary design studio Neue won a tender by The Directorate of the Police and The National Criminal Investigation Service to design new Norwegian passports. Its objective was to develop “a unique concept with a widely recognizable theme and a functional design of high quality”; and to increase security of the passports, ID cards and travel documents.
The unique design concept, which illustrates the Norwegian identity, is called Norwegian Landscapes and was immediately accepted as a document of high value by the jury. This minimalistic makeover comes with crisp, block colour covers that are finished in white, turquoise and red. Within the travellers can find abstracted, exciting landscapes that shall remain relevant for many years to come and avoid the risk of becoming obsolete.
When the passports are put under UV light by a Customs Officer, Norway’s natural landscapes drawn within the pages with fine line in pastel shades transform to show the northern lights in the night sky. This gives the highly appraised document a magical touch that convinced the jury who thinks “the concept is deeply rooted in Norwegian culture and will make the documents widely accepted among the population.”
Neue’s Managing director and advisor, Gørill Kvamme also explains that “all Norwegians are so connected to nature, it’s a very strong part of our history and defines us as a country,” and then adds that the sleek concept stems from searching for the “essence of something” which she says “represents the vast variety of nature and landscapes you find in Norway … which makes it relevant to all of us whether you have always lived there or just received your citizenship.”
