After allegations of plagiarism, Tokyo revealed an entirely new logo for the 2020 Olympics. Done by designer Asao Tokolo, the checkered design called “ichimatsu moyo” comes from the Japanese Edo period (1603-1867). The various shapes represent the different countries and cultures participating in the games. The simplicity and agility of a logo like this will make it easy to transform for various promotional materials, while at the same time sticking to the core of Japanese culture and design.
